FROM GOALS TO LASTING CHANGE

Clarity | Commitment | Transformation

Growth rarely happens by accident, it happens by design. Whether you are leading a team, navigating change, or striving for personal breakthroughs, having a clear framework can transform vague ambitions into real progress. Coaching models provide exactly that clarity. They take what could be an unstructured conversation and turn it into a powerful journey of reflection, awareness, and action.

Two of the most impactful models are GROW and its extended version T-GROWTH. Together, they not only help you set goals but also ensure those goals are turned into meaningful, lasting change.

The GROW Model

The GROW Model is one of the most established and respected coaching frameworks in the world. It was first developed in the 1980’s by Sir John Whitmore, together with Graham Alexander and Alan Fine. GROW stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will (Way Forward), and it provides a simple yet powerful structure that helps individuals move from where they are now to where they want to be.

What makes GROW unique is that it does not rely on giving advice. Instead, it uses open and thoughtful questions that encourage self-awareness, responsibility, and ownership. This shifts the power to the coachee, helping them discover their own answers and build their own motivation to act.

Think of it as a roadmap: it begins with defining the destination (Goal), then explores the starting point (Reality), considers different possible routes (Options), and finally, commits to the journey forward (Will).

GROW in Practice

G – Goal

  • What do I want to achieve?
  • What exactly do I want to accomplish?
  • What will success look and feel like?
  • How will I know I have reached it?

R – Reality

  • Where am I right now?
  • What is happening in my current situation?
  • What have I already tried and what were the results?
  • What challenges or obstacles are in my way?

O – Options

  • What could I do?
  • What are all the possible ways forward?
  • If I had unlimited resources, what would I try?
  • Who could support me in this?

W – Will or Way Forward

  • What will I do?
  • Which option will I commit to?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how motivated am I to act on this plan?
  • What is the very first step I will take?

The T-GROWTH Model

The T-GROWTH Model takes the strong foundations of GROW and expands them into a more comprehensive, sustainable coaching journey. The TGROW variant, which introduced the Topic stage, was popularised by Myles Downey. T-GROWTH builds further by adding two more crucial dimensions, Tactics and Habits, that transform a coaching conversation into a long-term growth process.

Here is how the three additions fit into the original framework:

  • Topic comes before Goal, helping to frame the conversation and identify the area of focus.
  • Tactics follow Will, turning commitment into a structured, actionable plan.
  • Habits close the model, ensuring that actions become part of everyday life so that progress lasts.

T-GROWTH in Practice

T – Topic

  • What is the focus?
  • What would I most like to explore today?
  • What subject would make this conversation worthwhile?
  • How can we make sure this is useful for me?

T – Tactics

  • How will I make it happen?
  • What specific steps must I take?
  • When will I complete each step?
  • What resources or support will I need?

H – Habits

  • How will I sustain it?
  • How can I integrate these actions into my daily life?
  • How will I track and review my progress?
  • How will I hold myself accountable?

Why These Models Matter

The beauty of both GROW and T-GROWTH lies in their simplicity and their depth. They are easy to understand, yet powerful in application. They are as effective in a leadership conversation as they are in personal reflection. Most importantly, they turn coaching into more than a conversation, they turn it into a catalyst for real and lasting change. Whether you are a leader aiming to empower your team, or an individual looking to create meaningful progress in your life, these models provide the tools and structure to help you unlock your potential and keep growing.

A Thought to Take Forward

Coaching frameworks like GROW and T-GROWTH remind us that progress is not about dramatic leaps but about clarity, small steps, and consistent habits that create meaningful change over time. Often, it takes only a single well-placed question to shift perspective and uncover new possibilities. As you reflect on these models, consider where in your own life or work a clearer goal, a more honest look at reality, or a simple habit might move you closer to the outcomes you want. Take a moment to pause, note it down, and allow yourself to explore where that awareness could lead.

If you feel inspired to go deeper into this process, whether through reflection or conversation, the opportunity is always present, and at Hatchmann we are ready to explore that journey with you whenever you choose to begin.
